TAG ON TAG OFF

Mastering the Hafilat system is about sequence. A single scan at both ends of your journey ensures accurate fare deduction and prevents max-fare penalties on the Abu Dhabi transit network.

Initial Boarding

The Entry Tag-On

Approach the validator located at the front door. Hold your Hafilat card flat against the white scanning circle. Wait for the green light and a single short beep. The screen will momentarily display your starting balance as the journey session activates.

Cabin Conduct

Once the scan is successful, move into the bus cabin. Keep your card accessible; transport inspectors may request to scan your card with mobile devices to verify a successful tag-on has occurred for the current route.

Arrival Procedure

The Critical Tag-Off

Before exiting through the rear doors, scan your card again at the exit validator. This computes the exact distance-based fare. Failure to tag off results in the system assuming you traveled to the route terminus, applying a maximum fare penalty.

Transfer Logic

60-Minute Window

If you are switching buses, ensure you tag off correctly. You have 60 minutes from your physical tag-off to tag-on to another bus without paying a second base fare. This allows for seamless transit across the capital's regions.

The Physical Contact

Success begins with a flat hold. The Hafilat card utilizes RFID technology that requires a proximity of less than 3 centimeters. For the most reliable read, do not wave or swipe the card across the sensor. Instead, press it firmly against the matte white circular indicator. This prevents "Card Clash" and ensures the validator processes your ticket within the standard 200ms window.

Avoid the Surcharge

Forgot to tag-off? The system defaults to the maximum fare for that route (typically up to 5 AED for city routes). Over several trips, this common error can drain your balance significantly. We recommend checking your balance via the hafilat online recharge portal to verify your transaction history and ensure your scanning behavior is correct.

Verify History

Card Clash

Avoid scanning your wallet if it contains multiple contactless cards (Bank cards, Emirates ID, or office passes). The validator may detect several signals and reject the scan. Always isolate your Hafilat card for a priority read.
